Board of Commissioners

Madison County is governed by an elected board of 3 members in the Commissioners model of Nebraska county government. In Nebraska, 67 out of 93 counties use the Commissioners method.

The three members of the Board of Commissioners, elected by their respective districts, serve as the legislative and executive of Madison County government.

The Board enacts legislation governing Madison County and determines overall policies for County departments, adopts the annual budget, establishes plans for the operation of County government, enforces various State statutes and enacts local legislation to serve and protect County residents.

Policy Making

County boards hold public meetings, plan and adopt a yearly budget, set the salaries of elected and appointed officials, review claims and approve warrants, supervise all county property, serve on various other committees, and serve as the County Board of Equalization.

Administration

The County Clerk serves as secretary to the county board, receives bills of claim, issues warrants, prepares, issues and files all marriage licenses, liens against personal property, articles of incorporation, liquor and tobacco licenses, licenses for hunting and fishing, and in smaller counties, Election Commissioner, and etc.

Meeting Schedule

The County Board of Equalization meetings once a month on Tuesday, the meetings start at 9:00 A.M.

The County Board hold public meetings every two weeks on Tuesday, the meetings start at 9:30 A.M.

The County Clerk keeps the official record of agenda and minutes for the meetings, these are available in the Clerk’s section of this web site.

County Highways

The County Highway Superintendent oversees all maintenance and construction activities on all county roads and bridges, supervises road crews for grading, filling potholes, snow removal, culvert and ditch cleaning, determine equipment and material needed and submits road improvement plans to the County Board.
